The Osage tribe thought the area to be perfect for hunting and fishing, so they settled near the junction of the Whitewater and Walnut rivers.
In 1868, C. When N. James moved there, he constructed a log cottage that doubled as a general shop and trading station. A post office was built in the settlement about that time, and C. served as its first postmaster. In honor of his wife, Augusta James, N. James gave the post office and the town those names.
